Senegalese singer Baaba Maal visits drought-stricken Mauritania

Halima Sneiba talks to Baaba Maal in Mauritania

Halima Sneiba, from Natriguel, Mauritania, explains to Senegalese singer Baaba Maal how she has spent the funds received from Oxfam on rice, grains and oils. “This year is a very difficult one, and we don’t have anything to eat. I was able to buy food to feed my family for a few weeks with this money from Oxfam.”

Baaba Maal has visited Mauritanian communities at the center of the current food crisis in the Sahel. Low rainfall, poor harvests, a lack of pasture and rising food prices are among the key factors driving this crisis, which now affects one in four people across the country. Today 700,000 people are food insecure in Mauritania.

Across the Sahel, 12 million people risk being victims of a serious food crisis if rapid action is not taken.

From the authors: Based on Michael Pollan’s talk “Food Rules” given at the RSA, this animation was created in the context of the RSA/Nominet Trust film competition. Using a mixture of stop-motion and compositing, our aim and challenge was to convey the topic in a visually interesting way using a variety of different food products. We made a little table top set up at home and worked on this a little over three weeks.

Introducing ‘The Doughnut’: A safe and just space for humanity

 

Kate Raworth, Senior Researcher at Oxfam Great Britain introduces her discussion paper “A Safe and Just Space for Humanity: can we live within the doughnut?”

In the run-up to Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, this discussion paper is an exploration of what such a model of prosperity might look like.

It presents a visual framework — shaped like a doughnut — which brings the concept of planetary boundaries together with the complementary concept of social boundaries, creating a safe and just space between the two, in which humanity can thrive.

Báo cáo mới của Oxfam: Tự chủ trong thích ứng với biến đổi khí hậu

Khi tài trợ cho thích ứng với biến đổi khí hậu bắt đầu được rót vào các nước đang phát triển, điều cần thiết là xác định cách quản trị tài trợ ở cả cấp độ toàn cầu và quốc gia để nhu cầu của những người dễ bị tổn thương nhất có thể được đáp ứng. Vấn đề cốt lõi chính là tính sở hữu quốc gia về các nguồn tài chính dành cho thích ứng với BĐKH. Do đó, các nhà cung cấp tài chính thích ứng phải đặt các nước đang phát triển vào vị trí tiên phong và bản thân các nước phải phát huy vai trò lãnh đạo cũng như đáp ứng nhu cầu của những người bị ảnh hưởng nhiều nhất bởi biến đổi khí hậu. Quan trọng nhất, xã hội dân sự và cộng đồng dễ bị tổn thương phải có khả năng đòi hỏi trách nhiệm giải trình về việc sử dụng các nguồn tài chính dành cho thích ứng với BĐKH.

Oxfam’s Briefing Paper: Owning Adaptation – Factsheet for Vietnam

As financing for climate change adaptation in developing countries begins to flow, it is essential that the governance of funding at the global and country level be shaped so that the needs of the most vulnerable can be met. The core issue is country-level ownership of adaptation finance. Providers of adaptation finance must put developing countries in the driver’s seat, while the countries themselves must exercise leadership and respond to the needs of those most affected by climate change. Most importantly, civil society and vulnerable communities must be able to steer and hold accountable the way in which adaptation finance is used.

Ảnh đêm Turkana: Sự khởi đầu mới từ Kenya

Xem slideshow on Oxfam International’s Flickr với một số bức ảnh của nhiếp ảnh gia Argentina Alejandro Chaskielberg về cuộc sống của người dân bị ảnh hưởng bởi hạn hán từ chuyến đi tới Turkana, Kenya với Oxfam.

Alejandro Chaskielberg tạo được thương hiệu với phong cách chụp riêng sử dụng ánh trăng bổ trợ bởi ánh sáng nhân tạo, và cũng là người được nhận danh hiệu Nhiếp ảnh cao quý L’Iris D’Or của Cuộc thi nhiếp ảnh Sony toàn cầu năm 2011.

Oxfam đã triển khai dự án hỡ trợ trồng rau cho 400 gia đình ở khu vực phía bắc của Turkana, Riokomor, Karebur, và Nayenaeemeyan vừa để cải thiện chế độ ăn hàng ngày và  bán rau tăng thu nhập cho các gia đình này. Với 88% những người tham gia là phụ nữ, mục đích cuae dự án là hỗ trợ phụ nữ trong cộng đồng – họ là người lo toan việc cung cấp thức ăn cho con cái. Dự án này giúp các bà mẹ cải thiện dinh dưỡng cho con cái trong khi cũng tạo cho họ một thu nhập nhỏ từ các loại rau dư thừa mà sau đó có thể được sử dụng trên các chi phí khác trong gia đình và giáo dục.
