Just a coincidence that it’s Oscars time in Hollywood, but we’ve had our own moment in the spotlight with The Global Journal ranking Oxfam number three on the world’s Top 100 Best NGOs list. Given the number one pick is the Wikimedia Foundation and number two is Partners for Health, a small but highly respected NGO that works only in Haiti, being chosen number three is an important recognition of Oxfam’s global leadership.

Oxfam Opportunity: Oxfam Communications Officer

Oxfam is looking for an experienced and dynamic Vietnamese citizen for the Oxfam Communications Officer, based in Hanoi with frequent travel.
The Role: Be part of Oxfam Communications Team: to provide overall leadership and coordination on media, lead communication and media aspects of Oxfam’s GROW campaign, support brand management. Oversee the development and/or produce high quality public information/programme communication materials. Identify creative ways and ensure the usage of digital media and social networks to raise Oxfam’s profile in the country, support the delivery of Oxfam’s programmes in Viet Nam, and support advocacy work. Be part of the Emergency Response Team when required.

Haiti: 2 years after the earthquake

This is a moving report from Caroline Gluck for Oxfam from Haiti, returning to some of the places she visited two years ago.

It is now two years since the most powerful earthquake in Haiti in 200 years struck the capital city of Port-au-Prince and the surrounding metropolitan area. In a matter of a few violent minutes the city was devastated. More than 220,000 people were killed, 300,000 were injured, and 1.5 million were made homeless. The earthquake was followed the same year by a cholera outbreak and then by Hurricane Thomas, making already severe conditions even worse.

Oxfam has worked in Haiti for more than 30 years, not just in emergencies but also with communities and local organizations to find long-term solutions to the endemic poverty that people face each day.

At the end of 2011 our focus has shifted from immediate humanitarian needs back to longer-term development. We are engaging with Haitian organizations to strengthen civil society, to help rebuild a new Haiti.
